July 29, 2015–Day 23 West Liberty and Red River Gorge, KY Day 1

Scott’s alarm went off at 6am. After a breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast, and cereal we headed out the door at 7:45.  Not having to take down the tent and cleaning with running water took off some of our getting going time. It is only 72 degrees and foggy this early, but it is expected to be another steamy day.

July 16, 2015–Day 11 Foster Falls, TN

Cody was up at 5:45 which was much too soon since the campers a few sites down that joined us after we had gone to sleep were up until at least 3. The kids quietly amused themselves until 7:20 and then the giggling could no longer be contained.  Brooke was busy with dressing and accessorizing her American Girl doll this morning while Cody was busy working on his Lego creations.  Scott had checked on the towels we had put on the line from swimming at the falls last night.  He said, “Nothing is dry. No surprise. This isn’t the west.”  Brooke didn’t skip a beat and said, “West is best.” Score!  Scott has been on a quest for years to get the kids to fall in love with the west. Then they can go to school out there and live out there long term. Then we can retire out there. (Lynn W. you are an inspiration!)

Day 41: July 27th, 2013: Smith Rock to 30 miles west of Unity, OR

We woke up at six to get an early start to climbing.  I have to admit I tried to get Scott to leave the climbing equipment in Illinois since we were limited on space and it has been quite a few years since we have climbed.  I’m pretty sure we haven’t climbed since Alaska three years ago.  In a rare moment I am glad he didn’t listen to me.  We had a great day.  We had about a ten minute hike to get to Rope De Dope, a top-roping area perfect for the wee ones and the slightly rusty parents.
