July 9, 2018 Day 6 Marquette, MI

Last night Scott and I headed to the store to stock up on food.  I went down one aisle, Scott went down another and said he’d be right back.  Ten minutes later I was looking up and down the aisles trying to find him since I was ready to go.  I finally found him talking with an employee named Tom. Tom works demos at the store.  He had just finished doing a demo on ice cream sundaes.  He and Scott had been talking about Honey Buns and Rice Krispie Treats and the best deals, and Tom offered Scott his leftovers from his demo day.  Tom gave us four large beautiful peaches, an entire container of vanilla yogurt, and chocolate syrup. He offered for us to come back some more days at the end of his shift to get more too.  Thanks to Tom we had a delicious breakfast of cantaloupe, peaches, and vanilla yogurt.

July 15, 2017 Day 11 Delray Beach, FL–Everglades

There is now a family tradition of visiting Everglades National Park in the most mosquito infested time of the year.  Scott had the opportunity to do so when he was a kid and he has now passed on the beautiful tradition to our children.  When Scott was a kid he even had the opportunity to camp in the ninety degree, high-humidity heat and go on a hike. We gave our kids the same opportunity today, but somehow they didn’t bite.  No pun intended.  Okay.  It was totally intended.  We were very underdressed compared to the others, less than ten, who also joined us at the Flamingo Visitor Center on a beautiful Saturday. Many of the national parks we visit our swamped on the weekend. Again pun totally intended. The experts at Flamingo Visitor Center all had on long sleeves, cargo pants, hats, and nets. We coated ourselves in bug spray and suntan lotion, but somehow we were still walking tasty morsels for the mosquitos.  Every now and then I might exaggerate on a few things, so let’s check the Skeeter Meter at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center, the first visitor station that we stopped at.

July 15, 2016–Day 11–Porcupine Mountains Union Bay to The Chippewa Flowage, WI

What an incredibly beautiful day after yesterday’s gloominess. I woke up at 7 to go for a run along the shore of Lake Superior.  A sign at the boat launch said that Lake Superior accounts for 10% of the world’s total surface fresh water. Listening and watching the waves lap upon the shore almost lulled me back to sleep.  Thankfully the camp hostess had out coffee and hot chocolate. Scott and I sipped our warm beverages while we watched the waves.  The kids came and joined us and the rock throwing soon commenced.

July 8, 2016 –Day 4– Peninsula State Park, WI

The beach was incredibly calm for a Friday morning, but then it was in the sixties.  The playground had an added bonus of being right next to a pavilion with free wi-fi. Always a bonus when we have no service.
