Day 68: Monday, August 9th: Hyder, Alaska to Fort Fraser

Last night we camped on a ledge overlooking Salmon Glacier.  The glacier was technically in British Columbia.  The road we were on wound from Alaska to B.C. We had hopes of waking up to some amazing views of the glacier.  This was our view.  We discovered why this area is called Misty Fjords.  There was a nice and refreshing mist showering us.  We decided to travel down forty minutes back to Stewart, British Columbia to eat breakfast.

Day 61: Monday, August 2nd - Valdez

Scott’s fabulous breakfast of French toast was enjoyed along the Valdez waterfront across Prince William Sound from where Brooke caught her first fish.  I should also mention that breakfast was really a brunch since we started cooking at 11:30.  At three in the morning Scott, Cody, and I all awoke to sirens, trucks racing along the highway behind us, and a guy running through the parking lot shouting.  We didn’t really get back to sleep until around five.  The funny thing is that no one else heard a thing.  Thus we didn’t even leave the tent until after 9:30.  We then spent some time watching the people fishing where Brooke caught her first fish and then we watched the large commercial boats reeling in a large catch.

Day 54: Monday, July 26th Heading to Seward Day II

We spent the night at our newest favorite camp spot at Hidden Lake.  The spot we had before was taken, but we camped across the road.  Thankfully there was a pavilion close to our campsite for Scott to cook breakfast in.  He had to take the tent down in the rain though.  Quite humorously we listened to the country song “Rain is a Good Thing” as we cruised out towards some partial sun and back to Highway Number One or the Sterling Highway.

Day 49: Wednesday, July 21st: Leaving Anchorage

Not that I’m a big partier, but waking up this morning was like waking up after a very late and very wild party.  We walked around looking at the damage and trying to assess the best method of recovery.  Someone up there must have a great sense of humor, because I thought the constant spitting rain was bad.  Apparently, I wasn’t thinking straight.  Things got a whole lot worse.

Day 48: Tuesday, July 20: Anchorage: REI, Polka, and Seaplanes

It was wet and slightly raining (spitting) this morning.  We were questioning heading out of Anchorage this morning, but then we decided to stick around for one more night.  Why did we decide to stick around?  SHOWERS! Tonight will be our last showers until…who knows?!?  The good news is that I am still on my original bottles of travel size (less than 3 oz each) shampoo and conditioner since we so rarely use them.

Day 37: Friday, July 9th Creamer's Field, Discovery River Boat

We had an adventure packed day.  Our first adventure was to hike two miles at Creamer’s Field, a migratory bird refuge.  Scott’s cousin’s family met us out there. Brooke loved having someone to run at the field with and play with at the playground they shared with us.  Besides having a beautiful walk and playing on a playground near the field, we were able to see some cranes.  The temperature was a little steamy, especially in the sun, so the kids were having a tough time walking.  Once they had some snacks, water, and shade they were back to smiling status.

Day 42: Wednesday, July 14th Leaving Denali

Happy Anniversary to us.  Scott proposed ten years ago and we married nine years ago.  We will have to postpone our romantic dinner together.  Instead Scott cooked up some sweet and sour chicken in the visitor’s center parking lot and we ate inside the visitor’s center restaurant.

Mountain Biking Ester Dome Single Track, Fairbanks AK

7/10/10 update - how sweet the trail is! What’s even sweeter is that April drove me up to the trail head. Thanks to the midnight sun, I didn’t even hit the trails until 8:30 pm. I rode the loop once in each direction. The trails were in great condition and the counter-clockwise flow was great. I posted a few addition pics of the trail head because I had trouble finding it. — I got up early to hit the dirt today. When I finally make it to the trail - 11 miles and I swear a straight up climb to the trail head- the trail was in great shape and flowy. I didn’t get a chance to ride the whole loop due to time. Maybe tomorrow morning…
