July 17, 2016–Day 13- Fenske Lake, MN to Lake Jeanette, MN

Rocks have kept Cody busy day and night.  He was even trying to work with his rocks while brushing his teeth at the picnic table.

Site number 6 opened up by chance.  It is an on-line reservable site only.  It just happened that the gentleman who reserved it decided to move over one spot.  The campground only has twelve sites and only two were open when we arrived. The site has its own giant rock overlook onto the lake along with personal stairs down to the lake and a perfect a place to launch and store the canoe.

Within an hour of arriving Nancy, the campground hostess, came to say hello.  We hadn’t seen her when we originally arrived because she stays at Echo Lake Campground.  Nancy has had a myriad of careers including a outdoor environmental teacher, Presbyterian minister, and science teacher in New Mexico near a Native American reservation.  Nancy came to take a closer look on our campsite originally because Brooke asked her about some berries she had found.  Nancy’s knowledge and calming nature made the almost two hours we spent with her fly by. Zumi, Nancy’s corgi, had us all laughing uncontrollably. It is hard to put into words exactly what Nancy and Zumi did for us, but I can say she left us with a warm peaceful smile and incredible memories.

The kids helped Zumi get more comfortable with the water.

Nancy showed us how Zumi liked to play.

After Nancy and Zumi left I worked with Scott to try to write down all the things she taught us, but it was like a kid trying to catch as many fireflies as they can before they are called in to bed.  The fireflies keep flying away faster than you can catch them, and even when you do catch them sometimes they sneak back out of your jar.  Even though I won’t remember all the details Nancy taught us I will remember her laugh, good hearted nature, and the feeling that we never wanted her to leave.

We had lunch and then headed out on Lake Jeanette.

Cody avoids pictures these days.  Trying to get a squirmy seven-year-old to smile on a rocking canoe is not so easy, but success was mine!

After hopping off the canoe the kids found a tiny frog.  Then they were off exploring and running around on the rock.

Cody gathered flowers for me on the canoe trip.  I love that he still thinks of me and brings me flowers.  Sometimes he just does a drive-by flower drop off and keeps running, but other times I get a hug and flowers.  Brooke practiced walking on water while at Lake Jeanette.

The mosquitoes were a little more than intense.  Scott added a layer of protection just to get the dishes clean.

The sunsets at Lake Jeanette were absolutely incredible.
