The first campground!  Dunewood – They do not accept reservations so it is a perfect location for those of us who like to plan our adventures on the fly. Today we only had a two and a half hour drive.  As Cody unbuckled his seatbelt he said, “I hope I meet some friends!”

The first order of business was eating some lunch.  Our schedules were a little off after having a late breakfast casserole with some incredible friends who spent part of their weekend with us.  We munched on some fruit, carrots, green peppers, banana bread and salsa and chips knowing dinner would not be too many hours away.

Next stop —> The Beach!  Cody couldn’t wait to get his hands in the muck.  He loves super saturated sand!

Cody hasn’t been up for posing for pictures today, but Brooke was happy to be at the beach and pose. So remember the picture of the back of the van packed from floor to ceiling?  In order to get the chair Scott is sitting in he had to empty everything off of the rear seat well to get to it.  He fully appreciated his effort though once he sat down and the kids did too because he brought…

The mini-shovels!  The kids were so excited to see him coming down the path with the shovels it was almost like the ice cream truck was coming down the street. The water was extremely cold but refreshing compared to the hot and humid eighty-eight degree day.

The kids and even Scott worked diligently to reshape the shoreline.  An afternoon squall rolled in and the beach cleared out just as quickly as the winds took our breath and sunny warmth away.

We headed back to the campground and Scott cooked up a dinner of burgers and baked beans while Brooke and I set up the tent.  I had to laugh as I struggled to remember what tent pole went where and wandered how anybody puts these things up without someone else to help keep the poles from scurrying out the other end. Brooke inflated the mats and we put out sheets instead of sleeping bags since it was fairly warm. See the watermelon Cody is attempting to cut?  It will make a reappearance in two days.

The kids love a chance to play with the fire and they love a reason to roast sugar even more.  Brooke somehow lost my chocolate gene and only eats the marshmallows, but she still enjoyed the fun s’mores anyway. She enjoyed dancing around the fire and helping collect firewood even more though.

Just in case anyone was wondering and wasn’t sure, sugar right before putting your kids to sleep in a completely new environment doesn’t mix well. The cuties rolled around for a bit giggling and trying to tickle each other.  After taking care of the fire Scott came in and read My Side of the Mountain to us.  It put Cody to sleep in under five minutes.  I know I slipped out into a blissful exhausted sleep for a minute or so too before Brooke stirred me back to reality. It was a picturesque way to end our first day together.
