Day 68: Monday, August 9th: Hyder, Alaska to Fort Fraser

Last night we camped on a ledge overlooking Salmon Glacier.  The glacier was technically in British Columbia.  The road we were on wound from Alaska to B.C. We had hopes of waking up to some amazing views of the glacier.  This was our view.  We discovered why this area is called Misty Fjords.  There was a nice and refreshing mist showering us.  We decided to travel down forty minutes back to Stewart, British Columbia to eat breakfast.

Cody loves telling us one of his new words, “ball”.  He also just started saying “baa” for his bottle.  He claps his hands for more and knows the sign for eat.  Amazingly he has learned how to shake his head for “yes,” but not “no”.

As we traveled back down to sea level things started to clear.

We left Alaska again this morning.  Interestingly when entering the US to go into Hyder there was no US Customs, but we had to show our passports to get back into Canada this morning.

We’re headed back to the Cassiar Highway today.  We are still 2,600 miles from home and we have only 13 days to get there.  Yikes!

365 miles today – that’s a new record!

It was also about 65 miles too many.  More than once we have discovered that at about 300 miles everyone starts trying to rip their seatbelts off and squirm out of their seats.  Yesterday, we ran into another (grown) family at a rest stop who are also traveling to Illinois.  They are averaging 700 miles on their long days.  Wow!  I keep suggesting to Scott that we are going to need to drive through the night one night, but he’s not fond of the idea.  For one thing the moose and other wildlife love to cross the roads at that time.  I should also add that Scott and I have done a few cross country trips together and for some reason I get sleepy very quickly driving at night.  Although that was pre-kids and I have been in sleep deprivation training for a while now.  Cody’s new routine seems to include being awake from midnight to 3:30.  I am very excited to be able to put him in his own room and not fear him waking the entire family and campground.

We are now on the Yellowhead Highway.
