Day 53: Sunday, July 25th: Heading toward Seward

We camped on a Homer hillside overlooking the spit last night.  Scott will laugh at me mentioning this, but I was a little taken aback when I went to pay for our site and found a post that noted that a bear had been spotted in the campground just four days prior.  For the most part bears want to be away from people, so when I saw that it concerned me that it might be a bear that associates people with food.  Most campers are responsible and respectful and clean up after themselves, but there are a few out there that make things dangerous for the rest of us.  It really took me aback because I have tried, in the best interest of enjoying this trip and not worrying myself into an early grave, to think that close bear encounters are rare.  It didn’t help things knowing our camping neighbor had no vehicle to store his coolers of yummy food in.  I’m going to go back to thinking bear encounters are rare now.  Back to our regularly scheduled post…

We had a surprise visitor at the park where we cooked up breakfast this morning.  I’ve never seen one so close.  It was incredibly magnificent.  No wonder their nests can be up to 2,000 lbs.  Homer has many places for bird watching outlined in the Mile Post.  Scott also captured baby eaglets in the nest and the mama not too far from the nest.  We hadn’t been lucky enough to catch sight of anything this close until this morning.

Scott also had another great sighting today, but this time it was an indoor swimming facility.  Brooke often asks, “Can we find something fun for me to do today?”  Not only did we get showers, but the price was only $4 a person, and we had a lot of fun.  Cody was even splashing away and trying to use a kickboard.  Since Scott had hot water and a mirror (Yippee!!!) he decided to shave.  At first he shaved his beard into a goatee and mustache.  He thankfully came to his senses and went completely clean shaven. ( I might have made a face :-/ ) It is always nice not to have to kiss a porcupine :-)  Photos of the clean shaven man to come soon.

Scott cooked up some spaghetti at a gazebo in Soldotna.  Then we headed on down the road back to Hidden Lake to camp.  This was another day where it rained most of the day, but the water and warmth inside the pool were most perfect.
