Day 48: Tuesday, July 20: Anchorage: REI, Polka, and Seaplanes

It was wet and slightly raining (spitting) this morning.  We were questioning heading out of Anchorage this morning, but then we decided to stick around for one more night.  Why did we decide to stick around?  SHOWERS! Tonight will be our last showers until…who knows?!?  The good news is that I am still on my original bottles of travel size (less than 3 oz each) shampoo and conditioner since we so rarely use them.

I invested in another pair of hiking boots today.  I went for regular hiking boots this time instead of backpacking boots since the most backpacking I do these days is carrying Cody.  They are lighter weight and lighter on the wallet.  I just hope they are heavy duty enough to last.

The library in Anchorage was really quite impressive.  It was three stories and outside the library they regularly have summer lunchtime concerts with their beautiful water display in the background.  Brooke was loving the Polka music.  Back in the dating era of our courtship Scott and I took dance lessons at MCC.  We did okay until we came to the Polka.  We were so foot tangled that we Polkaed right out of class and never went back!  It was great to see that Brooke isn’t scared to Polka away!  Even Cody and I had a chance to Polka.  Since Cody takes a while to eat, Scott and Brooke played Frisbee and soccer after the concert was over.  It was great to see them having fun together.  Unfortunately we had to wrap it up quickly because the heavens opened again.

On a totally random note….there is no sales tax in Anchorage.  Too bad I’m not in the market to buy anything large.

We went out to Lake Hood to watch airplanes take off and land.  Lake Hood is the world’s largest and busiest seaplane base, with approximately 800 takeoffs and landings on a peak summer day.  Brooke was given our old camera for about twenty minutes and she easily took two hundred photos.  She was really excited when she actually caught a moving plane.  She was fascinated with taking pictures of the inside of her mouth.  I quite humorously found myself teaching her how to correctly hold the camera back a little to get a proper picture of her mouth.  The camera thankfully survived the attempted swallowings.  Here are some of Brooke’s pics.

My pics:

We were driving on the runway to cross the road.  Yikes!

Brooke trying to take one more pic of her mouth!  Too silly!
