Day 32: 4th of July - Tok to Fairbanks

The gas tank is filled up at $3.59 a gallon, and that’s a bargain compared to the Canadian price of $1.18 a liter.  That equates to $5.31 a gallon.  Yikes!  Every visit to the gas station means at least $100.  That’s even harder to swallow when you consider we are only getting somewhere between 12 – 14 miles per gallon.  It’s a good thing we are camping instead of staying at hotels.  We have eaten out less than five times, so that saves money too.

It is difficult to watch our savings slowly trickle out, but Scott and I have both seen many retired couples struggling to go on hikes, maintain their RVs, and just get in and out of their RVs.  There are also the couples who seem as spry as if they were still in their 40’s, but no one has a crystal ball to know which couple they will be.

Since we are in Alaska we have our regular phone service again with no extra cost.  Service is limited to larger communities, but you can still leave a message and we will call back when we have service.

We are on our way to Fairbanks and we are going to try to meet up with Scott’s cousin Greg who just moved to Fairbanks from Massachusetts a few weeks ago.  Unfortunately, they are moving today, so the timing is not great, but we haven’t seen them since Brooke was four months old.

We thought these were big flies, but it is the unofficial state bird of Alaska: the mosquito! :-)

At the Delta Junction we said good bye to the Alaska or Alcan Highway
