The Alaska Highway was completed in just eight months during 1942.  The highway was essential to moving troops and supplies up from the lower 48 to Alaska during World War II.  With kids it could possibly take us eight months just to travel the Alaska Highway!  We are just in awe of what these men completed despite the terrain.  We are also in awe because in Chicago it takes an entire summer just to complete a short section of toll way let alone a 1,500+ mile highway.

The Milepost is full of information about camping and sights to see along the way to Alaska.  In the beginning there were so many things to see and do it was overwhelming.  As of yesterday, when we left Fort St. John we officially left civilization.  The Milepost is now full of exciting sights to see such as, “Large gravel turnout with litter bins to the west.”  There are occasional historic mile markers that are hard to see, but there is no regularity and the only way to judge where we are is to use the GPS and the occasional gravel turnouts.

Scott and Brooke tried to go fishing again today with a new lure.  Brooke didn’t plunk any rocks in today, but she decided she was going fishing with her own pole (a vine of some sort).  Scott is ready to throw in the proverbial fishing towel, but I think Brooke really enjoys her “fishing” time with Scott.
