Day 18: June 20th - Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!  Cody and I are hanging out in the van again while we wait for the sun to get higher in the sky and Brooke to wake up, not that there’s any hurry.  The more sleep she has the better day we all have. :-)  Speaking of, Scott noted that yesterday we did not have a single meltdown from Brooke, not one!  It is entertaining to watch all the animals scurry about while we are in the van.  Sometimes birds put on performances for us.  This morning it is the chipmunks and a baby bunny.  The picture of Brooke is after breakfast by the river across from our campground.  Brooke wanted to see the ferry, but we couldn’t see around the bend.

Last night we met a very delightful couple at the campsite next to us.  We exchanged each other’s professions and chatted about our trip a little, and before we even knew each other’s names they had offered for us to stay at a cabin of theirs further north.  Sharon just retired Thursday from Youth Ministry for over twenty years and Albert works as a Deacon in the Catholic Church while also working in the telecommunications industry.  They are incredibly friendly people and I would have loved to stay out chatting with them all night.  Their instant warmth reminded me of my roommate from college and her family.  I’m not even sure what time Scott crawled into the tent.  I was attempting to get the kids to sleep. Cody laughed and giggled in the tent for about twenty minutes after I tried to put him down. Brooke and I rested in the van for a little while in an attempt to calm her down without waking Cody.  In true Brooke style, she woke me up asking when it was time to go to bed.

Last night we had a delicious dinner of pork and beans and corn bread.  Scott cooked up the corn bread in his Outback Oven.  Some of you have requested pics of cooking so here they come.

The stove is inside the metal circle which is the windscreen.  Without the windscreen it is difficult to maintain any sort of consistent heat.  In Scott’s hand is the diffuser plate, which isn’t actually the original diffuser plate.  Somehow it was lost through the years, so Scott is using a pot lid with the metal ring.

This was just a regular box of corn bread.  We added corn and cheese.  It took some adjusting of the flame, but once Scott found the right temp. the bread was done in thirty minutes instead of the packaged time of twenty.  Yum.

I don’t often like to leave Cody on the ground.  Scott does.  This is a picture of what we thought was Cody’s first day of not eating everything on the ground.  Moments later his mouth was covered with dirt, stones, leaves, and this lovely stick.  He really wasn’t bothered much by the mess!
