Day 20: July 6th, 2013: Flagstaff, Arizona to Sedona, Arizona

So I was able to provide some early morning entertainment for the family.  Scott handed me my camp chair in it’s bag so I could sit down to eat breakfast.  Thankfully I dumped the chair out and didn’t shove my hand in to pull the chair out.  As I dumped my chair out, a little too close to Cody’s head, out popped a furry creature.  Then I squealed.  The mouse never made any noise.  In fact, the mouse stood on this stump and stared at me as if to say, “For goodness sake lady.  Why did you have to get so excited?”  Then he disappeared down the hole next to the stump like Alice’s white rabbit.

We are on our way to Sedona via 89A instead of Interstate 17.  The views were much more picturesque on the two lane road.

Mountain Biking in in Oak Creek, AZ

These are the views from Scott’s one hour bike ride in Oak Creek.  His route was Slim Shady to Templeton to Bell Rock Pathway.  The kids and I hung out at the park below while Scott was out and about.

The picture on the left doesn’t seem that special except for the canyons in the background.  However, only five minutes later Brooke was tired of getting bumped with the shovel and Cody was tired of Brooke being in his way.  Any guesses on how it ended?  Cody picked up the first fistful of sand and he strategically targeted Brooke’s face and down her back into her shorts.  As Brooke spit out the sand in her agape mouth she picked up several fistfuls of sand and blasted Cody until he went running.  I let them have their time outs with sand in their mouths.  I am one mean momma.  The picture on the right is important for two reasons.  First, it shows the ingenious covering over the playground providing some much needed shade.  We have never seen that before at a playground. It also shows Cody being super brave climbing something he was too afraid to attempt two minutes before.

Scott happened to see a brown sign for a church, and… he followed it.  He said, “Well, since we are on a pilgrimage, why not stop at one more church?”

Chapel of the Holy Cross

It was quite the circus getting up to the church and sadly even inside the chapel it was difficult to find peace, but the views were inspiring.  The chapel was rather quaint for the crowd it was gathering.

Chapel of the Holy Cross

We spent quite a few hours at the library in Sedona. I love Sedona even more now that I discovered it was named after an educator.

Sedona, AZ is named after Sedona Schnebly who lived from 1877 – 1950.

“Sedona Schnebly enriched the lives of those she touched and contributed to our history.  She is celebrated for her hospitality, industriousness and her commitment to education for people of all ages.”

We read about ten books on construction to Cody.  Brooke’s favorites were the Berenstain Bears. I remember when I was a kid if we achieved a goal my mom would splurge and take us to the bookstore for a new Berenstain Bear book.  I love that Brooke and Cody love them too.

I convinced Scott to make pizza for dinner.  While it cooked I went for a quick run.  Even though we dropped elevation today from where we have been camping in Flagstaff I still noticed the elevation difference from at home. I had to work a little harder than usual to get a satisfying breath.

While waiting for dinner the kids were “dying,” so Brooke started digging in the cooler.  Now, remember our cooler is only 50 quarts.  It is tiny enough that we know every item in it, well except for the mysterious watermelon that one time.  Anyway, we told her everything in the cooler, so she wouldn’t have to open it and waste the ice.  In true kid fashion she opened it anyway staring and hoping something magical would jump out at her.  I do remember doing this to my dad and driving him batty.  Sometimes we would even sneak peeks in the fridge just to steal some cold air on a hot day.  People often talk about how kids become their parents, but it is entertaining to see our kids become the kids we used to be.

Sedona sunset from Airport Rd.

We had two goals for today: Scott wanted to get in a bike ride in Sedona and we wanted to catch the sunset in Sedona.  We accomplished both.

Scott was chatting with someone at the park where we ate dinner and she directed us to Airport Road to view the sunset.  It was quite the gathering.  Cody sat in his little chair while he watched the sunset and started to do what Cody loves to do, dig.  “Mom, can you believe I’m still digging?”

Then we drove back down to our gravel road camping in Flagstaff for one last night.  This “campground” ties with the Maverick campground in New Mexico for the most nights since we started this trip, not of course counting Ed and Kayla’s house, which was four fantastic nights.
