The Great River Road Visitors & Learning Center

We stopped at The Great River Road Visitors & Learning Center at Freedom Park in Prescott, WI around 4:30 yesterday.  It was raining so we were having trouble deciding how to go about dinner and setting up camp.  I am so glad we stopped here.  We met an amazing volunteer named Janet.  She spent a lot of time helping us.  There were a lot of hands-on exhibits.  Cody was able to stand and crawl around and Brooke read her first word on her own.  Brooke and I were on our way to the bathroom to get some paper towels to clean up some water she spilled.  While in the bathroom she asked why a sign above the stairs said Exit.  The sign actually said Not an Exit, but I was so excited that she read a word.  It was completely random, and caught me by surprise.  She “reads” me stories all the time, but I can’t wait until she can actually read to me.

Speaking of milestones, here is Cody driving for the first time.  For those moms who are gasping, the van wasn’t actually running.

Brooke playing with a really neat Eric Carle puzzle that makes the noises of the Hungry Caterpillar, Busy Spider, and many more.  This puzzle made Cody squeal.

A picture of a life-size eagle’s nest.  The display said eagles’ nests can get up to 4,000 lbs.  They add more sticks to the nest every year.  The display had a neat button that let you hear the sounds of eagles.  Behind Brooke was a display about logging on the Mississippi.  There was a flap you could lift in order to smell fresh pine scent.  She said she didn’t like it at first, but kept going back to smell it.  Behind the eagle’s nest is a steering wheel for a steamboat – we think helm is the word?  We talked with Brooke about a Mark Twain and different types of boats.  We even ate out for the first time yesterday.  Janet, the amazingly helpful volunteer, told us about a quaint little Mexican restaurant just across the St. Croix River in Minnesota.  That also led us to camping in Minnesota.  Thanks again for all your help Janet.
