Day 14: June 16th: Saskatoon- Gordon Howe Campground

This campground is definitely unique.  We love that we can see the city and camp close.  However, we’re not so sure that the words city and campground belong together.  We give them credit though, in order to give you that true camping experience, we believe they have trucked in mass quantities of mosquitoes.

Our campsite is surrounded by lilacs. I love the smell of lilacs.  They are just starting to bloom up here.  Since lilacs only last about a week I’ve devised a plan to enjoy them for an entire month.  Next year we’ll just start traveling north once they are done blooming in Chicago.

The sleep exhaustion has finally gotten to Scott.  He almost woke me up last night to see the beautiful sunset.

It is hard to tell, but it is actually the security light for the apartments that our city campground backs up to.

In addition to the “beautiful sunset”, we were treated to a kitty looking for love in all the wrong places.  It rubbed and howled on Scott’s side of the tent for at least an hour.  Then there was the hospital that was less than a block away, and the cars roaring through the gravel at the apartment complex on the other side of our barbed-wire chain-linked fence.  Even with all that said, we like it, and we are going to stay another night.  Besides they have free Wifi, and free showers that are free of push buttons.

Underneath the eight foot bed (“that never needs to be made” – Scott sings) are our bins of clothing, food, diapers, bike stuff, shoes, jumper cables, tools, fishing pole, and a bunch of other miscellaneous but important items. We have enough space under the bed to slide over one bin at a time.  Getting to the bins that are two and three deep reminds us of that puzzle where one square is missing and you have to slide all the tiles around to get the picture to look just right.  Anyone know what that is called?

10 am – 1 pm

Scott and Brooke went to the Zoo today.  To be fair I was there too, but Cody was napping in the car, and so I dazed in and out myself to the call of the crazy peacock.  Brooke and Scott gave me the full story when they came back.  It started with Scott asking Brooke to tell mama about the neat animals that she saw.  She then turns and says, “ohh mama, we saw… Dada, tell mama about the stuff we saw.” Then we went to visit some gardens and an amazing park all on the same grounds.  A few bus loads of kids were also at the park.  Seeing all the kids at the park today made my heart ache a little to be back in the classroom.  School ends Friday of next week for the kids around here.

Another “asphalt picnic”.  This time at the zoo.  Cody in his favorite driving position again.

The green thing in the picture on the right is a boat.  One of the school kids climbed up on one of the seats and proclaimed, “Everyone! Everyone!  Stop rowing the boat!” I wanted to help him out and tell him they were rocking the boat, but I didn’t think he would appreciate my breaking into song,  “Don’t tip the boat over! Don’t rock the boat baby!”

A fern variety of peony.  I’ve never seen it before and thought it was quite interesting.

The crazy peacock on the roof and a Bald Eagle from the zoo today.

1:30 pm

You’ll have to excuse me.  I’m having trouble concentrating.  Scott and Brooke are inside Wal-Mart (yes, Wal-Mart again) and Cody and I are parked outside of a Chili’s.  We have Chili’s gift cards (my birthday and Christmas requests)  but somehow no one wants to eat there.  Well no one in the van.  I’m sure I can imagine a few of you saying, “I’ll go!  I’ll go!”  Anyway, I told Scott that if I wasn’t here when he got back, he would know where to find me.  The fajita scent is pulling me in.  I think I convinced Scott.  It sounds like we might do Chili’s for dinner.

YMCA Song Help Please

Out of the blue some of the songs from YMCA days came back to me, but only partially.  I have a binder of them back at home, but no sleep, no memory.  Brooke is loving them, but I need more verses.  I know someone out there remembers these, and if you do please send some additional versus my way.

  1. A Pizza Hut, A Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and a Pizza Hut. McDonalds, McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and a Pizza Hut.

  2. Oh I wish I were a little juicy orange, juicy orange.  Oh I wish I were a little juicy orange, juicy orange.  I’d go squirty squirty squirty over everybody’s shirty. Oh I wish I were a little juicy orange.  (Foreign car, bar of soap, ?)

3)The Princes Pat…

  1. Baby Jaws Du Du Du Du. (kid jaws, mama jaws, daddy jaws, grandpa jaws, shark attack – ahh!)  I can’t remember the rest

We found a crazy sign that seems to be everywhere.  Read it straight out.  It makes us giggle.
