Day 10: June 12th: Experimental Forest?

Scott came up with the idea of stopping at a farmhouse and asking if we could stay on their land.  That isn’t something I would ever do, but opposites attract, right?  Anyway, on his quest to find a farm we wandered down a gravel road and found an “Experimental Forest”.  Anyone else ever stay at one of these?  The only sign marking the forest was right in front of the overgrown drive.  It had a pit toilet and plenty of wide open land.  We have paid $20 for just as much, and this was free.  We also had some friendly cows lulling us to sleep, and greeting us to another, you guessed it, rainy morning.

We were able to enjoy watching the end of two movies last night: Ice Age 3 and Big.  Scott brought along his dad’s old laptop.  He starts the movie, puts it face down on the gear loft of the tent, and wa-la! we have a flat screen movie while we lie in our sleeping bags.  Scott says, “How’s that for roughing it?”

Our tent was placed on a very slight incline last night.  I never knew this before I met Scott, or at least I never thought about it, but you always want to make sure your head is above your feet, otherwise you wake up with a headache.  We played musical sleeping bags for a while last night trying to put Brooke’s potty and Cody’s play yard in the right spots.  Brooke wound up rolling into the potty most of the night.  I finally just put my arms around her and fell asleep that way.  However, as I have mentioned before, she likes to move.  So I finally took all of the stuff sacs for the sleeping bags, our coats, and the diaper bag and created a makeshift wall to try and keep her from crashing into the toilet again.  She didn’t have a very good night’s sleep, but at least she is happily singing a “Jesus” (she only remembers that one word) song from Vacation Bible School right now.

We splurged again last night.  The rain has been wearing us down and I was dreaming of a $5 Little Caesar’s large pizza.  It was enough to feed the whole family and we even had a piece left over.  We had a lovely dining experience inside the K-Mart of Devil’s Lake, North Dakota.  It definitely beat cooking another dinner in the rain.

Speaking of cooking, Scott has done most, if not all of the cooking so far.  He has also put up and taken down the tent with very little help.  With that said, I find it slightly satisfying that Scott keeps finding himself at the end of each day without having completed most of what he wanted to do.  He would usually come home from work everyday wondering what in the world I did with myself all day.  I would of course respond, “Ate Bon-Bons and soaked in a bubble bath.”  The truth of course being that most days it was difficult to even squeeze in a shower ( usually I keep them to ten minutes, not the luxurious 45 minutes of the other night ).  I’m glad he is finally seeing that it isn’t always glamorous “staying home all day” and that taking care of the kids is even more taxing than a full time job some days.  However, I also enjoy seeing his smiles from playing with the kids.  Even in the never-ending rain it is nice to do things as a family.  Family time is very hard to come by when we are at home.  Even when there is nothing to do (which hardly ever happens)  Scott is the personality type that has to find something to do, which doesn’t always include the whole family.

We are on a hunt for a luandry-mat, so i will stop for now.  I hope your day is sunny even if there are clouds. :-)

We still don’t completely have the phone situation figured out, but the best way to reach us will be to click the “Call Me” button to the right.  That will forward calls to us.
