Documenting our family’s journey to Alaska and back. Diapers, a tent, and a camera, we’re set…
Feb. 9th - 121 Days Until Departure
We are currently reading and researching to prepare for our trip. We are updating Scott’s passport and getting one for our newest traveler. Our list of To-Do’s is still growing. The largest item on the list is probably finding the newest “wedge” to travel in. While Scott and I traveled the US for a year, we only made small jaunts into Mexico, not a trek across Canada to Alaska and we didn’t have two cuties in tow.
March 5th - Declaration Day
Today Scott officially declared his desire for a leave of absence from work. Until today we were just planning and discussing a trip. Today was the first official step towards leaving home sweet home for 90 days.
March 11th - Preparing
Most days I am explaining to Scott why this traveling idea is not a good one, but occasionally I decide I better prepare because Scott is not one to give up on ideas easily. So in the spirit of trying to enjoy this…
“We do not remember days… we remember moments.” Ceasare Pavese
Today I am creating all sorts of lists. Lists of things to do before the trip, during the trip (boredom busters), lists of meal ideas, things to buy… I also put in an order for CPR and First Aid DVD’s from the library today. I was feeding Cody and yet again had a vision of a bear attack… They aren’t that common, right?
April 5th - The Word is Out
8 weeks, 56 days until June 1st, our estimated day of departure. The extended family cornered me at Easter and asked what was I thinking bringing two small children into bear country. I explained to them that I am just along for the ride. When I told Scott that he could travel on his own until the kids were bigger, he explained that he was willing to take the kids with or without me. Thus, despite my every effort to postpone this trip until the kids can actually understand not to pet the baby bears, it is time to dive head first into crossing things off of all the lists we have been creating. I look forward to being able to say, “It was an unforgettable trip,” when I know we are all safely at home and in one piece. The Momma in me is just a little more frightened about traveling than I was when I was 18 and without two cuties.
